Homeless people and social exclusion

Last week, when I was sitting on the bench in The Saxon Garden I saw a homeless person. His behavior suggested that he was on drugs. At the beginning he was walking from person to person asking for money. Later he went into the fountain and was walking in the water and drinking it. Some people ignored it but most of them were giving him hostile looks. No one was thinking about helping him. I think the fact that in our society are people who are excluded is really sad. Most of us when someone asks for money don't even look at him and walk away. We got used to such situations, because of a large quantity of homeless people. It’s impossible not to live one day without seeing someone suffer or hearing about some difficult life situations on the media. As result our society is desensitized and ignores needy person.

  1. You could a bit deeper with your thoughts. Why do we ignore homeless people - is it just because of how many of them there are? What is the psychological mechanism behind it? Why are some people just indifferent and some are openly hostile towards them? What other unpleasant phenomena do we ignore?

  2. You don't want to give money to people who are on drugs or drunk. You would rather give them to homeless person which you can see that really needs them and wont spend them on stimulants
