Ecological thinking

Sometimes, we can see that many people order drinks "without straws". I noticed some restaurants and bars, where don't sell drinks with straws or barman/waiter give them only at request of client.  Other activity is reducing plastic straws by replacing them by alternative ones made of straw, metal or paper. Moreover, this campaign is promoted in media by many famous people of different professions. I think in these years ecological thinking is more well-like and support by society. More and more often such a social initiatives are popularized. Nowadays, society has more extensive knowledge about disadvantageous effects of human impact on the global environment. I think that our society step by step starts to tring protect the environment and thinking ecologically, what is a good sign for the future.

    Still, we have a long way to go. Take our system of recycling waste which is completely ineffective. Our school doesn't even sort paper waste (which we produce huge amounts of) from other waste.

    Every step to improve the condition of Earth is good but I think that the one that would really improve our life would be reducing the number of cars driven every day in major cities.

Wonderfull and Deadly Glowing Sand

Will Ho, a marrine biology photographer from Taiwan, captured amazing images of glowing blue sand, on the beach in the Maledives. As a matter of fact, this glow was caused by living creatures, which are actually a type of bioluminescent plankton called Lingulodinium polyedrum. Typically, these creatures float around the ocean undetected. They don't glow all of the time. It takes energy to make the chemicals that allow them to glow. However, when they are under stress, whether from strong current or crashing wave, they emit beautiful light. This marvelous phenomenon was used by director Ang Lee in the film  "Life of Pi". Nevertheless, this phenomenom is not a good think. It's also know as a "red tide", what is common term used for harmful algal bloom. Christmas Island Red Crab Migration

Adult red crabs begin their breeding migration to the sea as soon as the wet season starts and can last up to 18 days. This proces is fixed around the phases of the moon. If there isn't enough time for individual parts  of their migration, they will delay the start. Female Red Crabs release eggs into the sea precisely at the turn of the high tide during the last quarter of the moon. The eggs hatch immediately on contact with the sea water. After about a month in the ocean, "Crab babies" gather  and leave the water. Numerous humans activities contribute to increased mortality among Red Crabs. The most common cause is crushing by vehicles .  For these reasons, "crab crossing" are being constructed on roads which cross main crab migrations. Chief Ranger Muller and his team are currently helping 50 million crabs on their annual migration. Peacock and computer screen

The main topics in this podcast are peacocks and colors. Lector tells some basic information about peacocks and their behavior, how work human receptors and what is the difference between normal color and color on peacock's tail named structural color. And how people could use structural color in technology.  I think that it's great idea to save energy. If we could make colors through complex structures instead of normal screens, we would in some way relieve to our planet. Nowadays, people use a lot of electronic devices.
